Sgt. Maj. Kasal completes tour as I MEF sergeant major

The senior enlisted member of I Marine Expeditionary Force, Sgt. Maj. Bradley Kasal, will formally relinquish the sword of office of I MEF sergeant major to Sgt. Maj. James Porterfield during a relief and appointment ceremony May 18 aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California.  
 
Kasal began his career in 1984 just south of Camp Pendleton at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego. After several deployments including the 15th Marine Amphibious Unit, the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit Special Operations Capable, the 11th MEU, and the 31st MEU, he was promoted to the rank of first sergeant. In April 2004 he deployed with 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, as the Weapons Company first sergeant, where he received the Navy Cross for heroism during combat operations in Fallujah, Iraq. He assumed the office of sergeant major of I MEF in February 2015.  His personal decorations include the Navy Cross, the Legion of Merit, the Purple Heart and the Meritorious Service Medal. 
 
Porterfield was most recently the sergeant major of 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. Since enlisting in the Marine Corps in March 1989 he has deployed in support of several named operations including Operation Iraqi Freedom I, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom II. His personal decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal.
