Two fallen California Marines to receive Navy Cross for actions in Afghanistan
Two Marines from 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion will be posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for actions while deployed to Afghanistan in 2012.  The awards will be received by the families of Staff Sgt.   Recon Marine awarded Silver Star Medal, Purple Heart
Patrolling between a tree line and a row of buildings, Staff Sgt. Timothy Williams and his squad heard the sharp cracks of rifles and immediately realized they were being ambushed. Outnumbered and under heavy enemy fire, Williams, a section leader with 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, found himself relying on his instincts and training to protect himself and his Marines.  Williams, a native of Hudson, Mich., received the Silver Star Medal and the Purple Heart for his actions that day during an award ceremony held at Camp Las Flores here, Jan. 7.  MORE

  Marines utilize shock-absorbing concrete during live fire training
Marines with Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, swarmed the Combat Center when they conducted live fire training in an urban facility, here, during their Mission Readiness Exercise Dec. 6.  The facility, titled Range 210, resembled an urban environment and was unique because its buildings’ walls were constructed of shock absorbent concrete.  MORE
