SAN DIEGO – Supporters cheer as veterans of the Vietnam War enter the room at the Scottish Rite Event Center in San Diego March 29, 2016. The center hosted a Vietnam War 50th anniversary commemoration as part of the presidential proclamation of commemoration for Vietnam veterans, which extends from Memorial Day 2012, through Veterans Day 2025. Hundreds of veterans attended the event where dozens of organizations, such as the San Diego and San Marcos Vet Centers, came to show their support and present resources available to veterans. According to Karen Schoenfeld-Smith, the team leader for the San Diego Vet Center, being in war changed these veterans and after the less than warm welcome they received upon their return, it is important as a community to show that their sacrifice is appreciated.
