I MEF to conduct Exercise Steel Knight 24
3 Dec 2024

U.S. Marines and Sailors from across I Marine Expeditionary Force, U.S. 3rd Fleet and Airmen from various units will conduct annual Exercise Steel Knight 24, Dec. 2-19, 2024.

The exercise will take place at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Beale Air Force Base, and San Clemente Island in California and at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, Arizona.

Steel Knight 24 is a two-phase, scenario-driven exercise aimed at enhancing mission readiness, joint interoperability, and showcasing the U.S. Marine Corps as the nation’s force-in-readiness.

Phase one, a mission rehearsal exercise led by the 1st Marine Division, will certify the 1st Marine Regiment in planning, deployment, and command and control for the upcoming Marine Rotational Force in Darwin, Australia. Marines will test their ability to execute core crisis response missions, such as rapid deployment and embassy reinforcement, while assessing their readiness to quickly respond to global crises and deploy forces to support U.S. interests abroad.

Phase two is a command post exercise led by I Marine Expeditionary Force, designed to maintain and enhance proficiency in command-and-control processes as a joint task force. This phase will focus on decision-making, coordination, and communication in a simulated operational environment.

The training will ensure each level of command is optimized for naval expeditionary warfare in contested spaces and can be purpose-built to facilitate sea denial and assured access in support of U.S. Naval fleets.
