Sergeant Major, 1st Radio Battalion
Sgt. Maj. K.M. Labaran

Sergeant Major Labaran enlisted into the Marine Corps on 14 September 1998 and completed Recruit Training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, CA.  Upon graduation from Recruit Training, Sergeant Major Labaran proceeded to Marine Combat Training at Camp Pendleton, CA for instruction and then to Fort Sill, OK to the Cannon Crewman's Course.  Upon completion, he earned the Military Occupation Specialty of 0811 Field Artilleryman and was also promoted to the rank of Private First Class.

In April 1999, Sergeant Major Labaran reported to 1st Battalion 12th Marines, Kaneohe Bay, HI.  In November of that year, he was promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal.  Throughout his time with 12th Marines, Sergeant Major Labaran completed two deployments to Okinawa, Japan as part of the Unit Deployment Program. He was promoted to the rank of Corporal in December 2000, and to the rank of Sergeant in February 2002. 

In May 2002, Sergeant Major Labaran reported to 1st Battalion 11th Marines, Camp Pendleton, CA, where he served as a Section Chief.  During his tenure, Sergeant Major Labaran conducted two combat deployments to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  He participated in the Initial Invasion in 2003 and Vigilant Resolve in 2004.

In April 2005, Sergeant Major Labaran reported to Drill Instructor School, Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego.  Upon graduation, he was assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion where he served as Drill Instructor and Senior Drill Instructor.  He was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant in November 2006.  In November 2007, Sergeant Major Labaran was selected to serve as part of the Instructor Staff at Drill Instructor School.

In December 2008, Sergeant Major Labaran reported to 1st Battalion 11th Marines, Camp Pendleton, CA, where he served as Platoon Sergeant, Battery Gunnery Sergeant and Battery First Sergeant.  During his tenure, Sergeant Major Labaran participated in a deployment to Kuwait and Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

In May 2011, Sergeant Major Labaran was selected to the Assistant Marine Officer Instructor Program.  He completed two Platoon Leaders Course rotations at Officer Candidate School and reported to Southern University Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps. He was promoted to rank of Gunnery Sergeant on July 2013.

In May 2014, Sergeant Major Labaran reported to 2d Battalion 11th Marines where he served as the Battery Gunnery Sergeant for Battery F and Headquarters Battery.  During his tenure, he deployed to Okinawa, Japan as part of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). 

In January 2017, Sergeant Major Labaran was frocked to the rank of First Sergeant and received orders to Marine Combat Training Battalion, School of Infantry East to serve as the Company First Sergeant for Hotel Company.  

In February 2019, Sergeant Major Labaran reported to Headquarters Company, Combat Logistics Regiment 25 where he served until the unit’s deactivation in July 2020.

In July 2020, Sergeant Major Labaran reported to 1st Radio Battalion as the Company First Sergeant for H&S Company until April 2021, where he was frocked to his current grade and assumed the role of Battalion Sergeant Major.

Sergeant Major Labaran education includes a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from Southern University and A&M College and a Masters of Business Administration from East Carolina University.  Sergeant Major Labaran's personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with four gold stars in lieu of fifth award, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars in lieu of third award, and Combat Action Ribbon. Sergeant Major Labaran was recognized as the AMOI of the year for the years 2012 and 2013.  In 2013, Sergeant Major Labaran was selected as the Naval Service Training Command "Marine of the Year”.
