Since the Benghazi attack, Marines have deployed or re-positioned in response to regional unrest in the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) and U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) areas of responsibility. In a rapidly changing security environment, SPMAGTF-CR was created to oversee multiple requests for forces and provide a crisis response force to the region.

Per Expeditionary Force-21, the Marine Corps' premier guide for future posturing across the globe, SPMAGTF-CRs are instrumental in providing the right force in the right place at the right time.

Since October 2014, now in its fourth iteration, the Marines and sailors of Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force - Crisis Response - Central Command (SPMAGTF-CR-CC) continue to serve as the Marine Corps' land-based, expeditionary crisis response and contingency force in U.S. Central Command. This forward unit has become an integral part of Operation Inherent Resolve, providing kinetic and non-kinetic strike capabilities, aviation logistics support to operations across CENTCOM, as well as participation with partner nations' security forces to conduct combined military training, and strengthening partner capacity within the region.
