1st Intelligence Battalion Sergeant Major
Sgt. Maj. J. C. Stewart

Sergeant Major Stewart enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on 4 January 2005. A native of Soegel, Germany, he completed Recruit Training in Paris Island, Marine Combat Training in Camp Geiger, and Aviation Technical Training in Pensacola, Florida, graduating with honors. He later earned the military occupational specialty of Communication, Navigation, and Weapons Systems Technician (6324) at the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training, also graduating with honors.

Assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 369 (HMLA-369), Sergeant Major Stewart served in multiple combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. During this period, he distinguished himself through technical expertise, leadership, and operational excellence while advancing through the ranks. He led avionics initiatives, managed quality assurance programs, and served as the Staff Noncommissioned Officer in Charge of an Avionics Detachment in Helmand Province, experiences that shaped his leadership philosophy centered on accountability, team development, and mission accomplishment.

As a Formal Schools Instructor at the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training, he qualified as an Instructor Evaluator on multiple aircraft platforms and mentored Marines at all levels. He also served as the International Military Student Officer, facilitating engagement with senior foreign military leaders and strengthening international partnerships.

Sergeant Major Stewart later joined the Marine Corps Embassy Security Group (MCESG), where he served as a Detachment Commander in Manila, Philippines, and Ljubljana, Slovenia. In these assignments, he led Marines conducting sensitive diplomatic security operations while working closely with Department of State officials and international partners. His command tours were marked by disciplined execution, strong unit cohesion, and effective relationship building.

Returning to the operating forces with HMLA-773, he served in several leadership roles, including Quality Assurance Division Chief. He oversaw critical programs such as anti-terrorism, communications security, and professional military education while mentoring and developing Marines. During this assignment, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Technical Management, graduating magna cum laude.

At Headquarters Marine Corps Manpower Management Division, Sergeant Major Stewart served in enterprise-level assignments focused on personnel management and strategic manning. As Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, he helped maintain alignment and communication across senior Marine Corps leadership.

In August 2023, he assumed duties as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader for MCESG Region 8 (Central Europe), overseeing enlisted force development, embassy engagement, and operational readiness across the region. In July 2024, he transitioned to Command Senior Enlisted Leader for Region 7 (North and West Africa), where he continued providing senior enlisted leadership across a geographically dispersed and strategically important region.

In June 2026, Sergeant Major Stewart assumed his current duties as the Command Senior Enlisted Leader for 1st Intelligence Battalion.

His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with gold star, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with gold star, and the Department of State Superior Honor Award. He is married to Ann Stewart, and they have two children.
