ARABIAN SEA -- Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 211 cross-decked F-35B Lightning IIs from HMS Queen Elizabeth to the amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2), Nov. 8, 2021. U.S. Marines from “The Wake Island Avengers” were transported by a Royal Navy Merlin MK IV to the Essex to recover and refuel the F-35Bs, before launching them on mission ultimately to return to Queen Elizabeth. This evolution demonstrated the strategic importance of F-35 capable allied carriers, as well as the interoperability the F-35B facilitates. Simultaneously, aircraft attached to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron (VMM) 165 (Reinforced), 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, landed on Queen Elizabeth demonstrating increased interoperability, information sharing, and expanded access across the region as allies, as well as credible and capable forces operating in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.

Marines with Maritime Raid Force, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, conduct sustainment training at Marine Corps Base Hawaii and Marine Corps Training Area Bellows at Oahu, Hawaii, October 14-19, 2016. The MRF training included combat marksmanship, close-quarters battle drills, and parachute familiarization operations. The training took place in conjunction with the MEU's Western Pacific 16-2 deployment.

Marines conduct a Water Purification Training Exercise aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., April 29, 2016. During the training, Marines employ the TWPS (Tactical Water Purification System) and LWPS (Lightweight Water Purification System) to familiarize them with proper system usage and necessary troubleshooting skills in preparation for the MEU’s upcoming Western Pacific 16-2 deployment. The TWPS is capable of producing 600 gallons of purified water per hour and the LWPS produces roughly 400 gallons of water per hour. Both systems contribute to the establishment of a purified water checkpoint, which filters water pulled from a contaminated source and provides a small populace with clean, potable water.
