1st Marine Division commanding general Eric M. Smith, SgtMaj. William T. Sowers, and CMDMC M. J. Roberts wish Marines of the 1st Marine Division a happy birthday. 1st Marine Division was founded on Feb. 1, 1941 aboard the USS Texas in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and is the oldest active duty division in the Marine Corps.

Maj. Gen. Eric M. Smith, commanding general of 1st Marine Division, Sgt. Maj. William T. Sowers, sergeant major of 1st Marine Division, and Master Chief M. J. Roberts, command master chief of 1st Marine Division, reflect on the significance of the Division's 77th anniversary and the impact of the Marine Corps' oldest division.

The 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit was originally established as the 13th Amphibious Unit, Feb. 1, 1985 before being redesignated on Feb. 5, 1988. For more than 30 years of amphibious operations and exercises, the Marines and Sailors of the "Fighting Thirteenth" have continued to provide expeditionary relief and combat power from ship to shore all over the world. 11th Marine Regiment will celebrate its centennial with a battle colors ceremony honoring its history and heritage Jan. 9 at 9:00 a.m. at the Camp Pulgas gymnasium aboard Camp Pendleton. The centennial celebration will unite current and former Marines serving in the 11th Marine Regiment as they rededicate their battle colors with awards and campaign streamers from the regiment's campaigns including World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and recent operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
