U.S. Marine Cpl. Joshua Backus plays his violin aboard the dock landing ship USS Rushmore (LSD 47). Backus is a radio technician with Headquarters and Service Company, Battalion Landing Team 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit. Music has influenced Backus to master any task he takes on and he uses it to inspire others on ship to do the same. The Marines of BLT 3/1 are the ground combat element of the 15th MEU, and embarked aboard the ships of the Essex Amphibious Ready Group, are deployed in support of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.
