Commemorating the Fallen: U.S. Marines Play Memorial Rugby Match in Darwin

On Sept. 11, 2017 U.S. Marines with Marine Rotational Force Darwin played a rugby match against the Darwin Stray Cats Rugby Club to honor and remember the lives lost during the terrorist attacks on 9/11. The match has become an annual event to commemorate the friendships made during a rugby match that took place between U.S. Marine and sailors with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit and the Stray Cats on September 11, 2001. “I would say I’m truly passionate about Rugby,” says 1st Lt. Jane Paar, an adjutant with 1st Law Enforcment Battalion, I Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group. Paar has participated in multiple sports and theatre arts as a teenager and did not learn of Rugby until a friend introduced her to the sport later during high school.
