Marines, Sailors, Coast Guardsmen and the Royal Canadian Navy participate in Galley Wars during LA Fleet Week 2017 in Los Angeles, Calif., Sept 4, 2017. Galley Wars was a hamburger-grilling competition between the services where three celebrity chefs judged the preparation, taste, and presentation of each burger and sides to decide which team created the best meal. LA Fleet Week is an opportunity for the American public to meet their Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard team and experience America’s sea services. During fleet week, service events, showcase capabilities and equipment to the community, and enjoy the hospitality of Los Angeles and surrounding areas have to offer.

On this day in 1918, Marines with the 5th Marine Regiment, fought alongside U.S. Army, British and French forces against the German Spring Offensive at the Battle of Belleau Wood. Allied forces continued through enemy lines despite the sizeable forces they faced. The results of this battle helped shaped the Marine Corps into the fighting force we have today. Retired U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Martin Brandtner is laid to rest at The Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley, Nev., Jan. 18, 2017. Lt. Gen. Brandtner is one of two Marines to be awarded two Navy Crosses for his actions during the Vietnam War. Marines with 11th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, celebrate St. Barbara's Day by participating in field events at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., Jan. 12, 2017. St. Barbara is the patron saint for artillery units and is honored every year by the regiment to celebrate being a part of an artillery unit and come together as a group.
