ARABIAN GULF (Oct. 3, 2015) U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Brianna Mikus uses music as a getaway from the daily stresses of being deployed aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Essex (LHD 2). Mikus is a radio operator with Combat Logistics Battalion 15, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit. U.S. Marine 1st. Lt. Hunter Harrison speaks about the sustainment training conducted by India Company, Battalion Landing Team 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit. Harrison is a platoon commander with India Co, BLT 3/1. The Marines of BLT 3/1 executed a series of attack and maneuver drills consisting of machine gun, grenade, rocket, squad and night attacks. Elements of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit are ashore in Djibouti for sustainment training to maintain and enhance the skills they developed during their pre-deployment training period. The 15th MEU is currently deployed in support of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of operation. U.S. Marines with Kilo Company, Battalion Landing Team, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, conduct a short-range marksmanship qualification course aboard the dock landing ship USS Rushmore (LSD 47). Marines grappled for two minutes prior to going through the course of fire to simulate firing under stress and fatigue, which can occur in combat. The marksmanship course refined Marines combat marksmanship skills and incorporated the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, which reinforces the warrior ethos instilled in them. U.S. Marine Cpl. Roman Fernandez’s boxing background helps him succeed as a Marine and team leader with Lima Company, Battalion Landing Team 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit. Currently deployed aboard the USS Essex (LHD 2) with the 15th MEU, he coaches Marines within his company several times a week. After the deployment, Fernandez hopes to finish up his enlistment with the Marine Corps Boxing Team.
