Maj. Gen. Mark A. Clark, the commanding general of Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command, presented the Navy Cross to Russell and Marcia Mote, during a ceremony aboard Camp Pendleton, Jan. 18, 2014. Their son, Staff Sgt. Sky R. Mote, an explosive ordnance disposal technician with 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, MARSOC, was killed in Afghanistan in 2012 when his team came under enemy fire from an Afghan uniformed police officer attacking from inside the tactical operations center. Mote, from El Dorado, Calif., exposed himself to a hail of gunfire to draw attention away from others, halting the shooter's pursuit of his comrades. He remained in the open and engaged the shooter until he fell mortally wounded.
