U.S. Marine Corps Capt. John Staton, left, with Marine Rotational Force-Southeast Asia, I Marine Expeditionary Force, guides a Philippine sailor and marine through a mechanical advantage control hold technique at a force protection subject matter expert exchange during Exercise Sama Sama 2023 on Fort Bonifacio in Manila, Luzon, Philippines, Oct. 4, 2023. The U.S. service members conducted a practical application of the force protection SMEE to teach Department of the Navy regulations on vehicle inspections and mechanical advantage control hold techniques. Sama Sama is a multilateral exercise including forces from the Philippines, United States, Australia, France, Japan, Canada and the United Kingdom designed to promote regional security cooperation, enhance maritime interoperability and maintain and strengthen maritime partnerships. MRF-SEA is a Marine Corps Forces Pacific operational model which involves planned exchanges with subject matter experts, promotes security goals with Allies and partners, and positions I Marine Expeditionary Force forces west of the International Date Line.
