Preventive Medicine

The overall mission of the I-MEF Preventive Medicine section is to support the mission of the I MEF and its subordinate elements by protecting and promoting the health of it's Marines and Sailors through:

Garrison

Provide technical and professional support / assistance to activities within the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force; when requested, in the identification, monitoring and correction of health hazards when capabilities exceed those at the local level.

Provide oversight for the MEF PMR Programs for its respective organic aid stations.

Administer the Command PMR TAV program.

Provide unit commanders with timely status reports of Preventive Medicine programs and After Action Reports (AAR's) at the conclusion of operations or exercises.

Provide consultation, training and supervision for mass immunization programs.

Compile and provide relevant medical intelligence briefings to the Preventive Medicine Officer, Surgeon and command personnel as appropriate.

Draft instructions, notices, and other directives; as appropriate, to present Preventive Medicine (PREVMED) and Environmental Health information and requirements.

Provide assistance consistent with the PREVMED personnel expertise and resources in the event of an emergency or disaster.

Update and disseminate necessary Force Health Protection messages and information.

Provide in-service training to medical and non-medical personnel concerning relevant Preventive Medicine topics

Inform and educate the I MEF and subordinate public health workforce and external customers about health issues.

Identify, coordinate, develop, and review local preventive medicine training programs

Deployed

Identification of threats to force health, both natural and manmade, using surveillance to include pre-post deployment health assessments and reassessments.

Prepare for and conduct actions to eliminate those threats to include vaccination of forces, education and other intrinsic methods.

Conduct camp / site assessments, waste management, food and water safety, vector control, medical entomology and threat analysis through disease surveillance.

Provide measures to control populations of insects, birds and animals that cause disease in humans and are a threat to force readiness and combat effectiveness.

Collect and receive daily Preventive Medicine SITREPs on the status of all base, camp, site sanitation programs. Analyze information and implement corrective action to preclude potential public health or disease outbreak occurrence.
