Lt. Col. Anthony M. Mercado

LtCol Mercado attended State University of New York College at Brockport, Brockport, New York, and in 1995 received a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and Political Science.  Upon graduation he worked as a stockbroker for several firms on Long Island and on Wall Street.  He joined the United States Marine Corps in September of 2001 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on March 28, 2002.  After attending the Basic School he attended the Infantry Officer Course and became a 0302 Infantry Officer.

2nd Lieutenant Mercado received orders to Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Marines, Camp Lejeune North Carolina, as a Rifle Platoon Commander.  He deployed in 2004 to Afghanistan with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) as the Maritime Special Purpose Force (MSPF) trailer platoon commander in support of Operation MOUNTAIN STORM.  He was then assigned as the Charlie Company Executive Officer and deployed to Fallujah, Iraq in 2005. 


After returning to the U.S. he was assigned to 2d Reconnaissance Battalion and deployed to Fallujah, Iraq in 2006.  Upon returning he was assigned as the company commander for Delta Company and subsequently Charlie Company, where he also was tasked as the Remain Behind Element (RBE) Officer-in-Charge (OIC).  


In February 2008, Capt Mercado was selected to stand up 2d Force Reconnaissance Company where he deployed fully mission capable platoons in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). 


In July 2009, the Marine Corps issued Capt Mercado Permanent Change of Association (PCA) orders to 2d Marine Raider Battalion where he initially served as the Future Operations Officer.  He deployed with 2d Marine Raider Battalion as the Special Operations Task Force Assistant Operations Officer.  During the deployment he was selected to serve as a team leader for a US Army Operational Detachment Alpha (ODA), conducting combat operations in Helmand Province Afghanistan. Upon SOTF redeployment, he served as the 2d Marine Raider Battalion Operations Officer.


In June of 2012, Capt Mercado was frocked to the rank of Major and assumed command of Marine Special Operations Company Golf where he deployed to Afghanistan in support of OEF.


After redeploying, Major Mercado was assigned as the 2d Marine Raider Battalion Executive Officer until July 2015.


Major Mercado attended the Marine Corps University Command and Staff College from July 2015 to June 2016 where he earned his master’s degree.

The Marine Corps issued a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) orders to Major Mercado to SOCAFRICA in Stuttgart Germany. Here he served as the North West Africa Desk Officer for the SOJ35.  After 18 months, Major Mercado was selected from a group of competitive O4s and O5s to serve as the SOJ33 Chief, an O5 post command billet.  The Marine Corps frocked him to LtCol in June 2018. LtCol Mercado subsequently received orders to command 1st ANGLICO in the summer of 2019.


His personal awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals with Combat Distinguishing Device (2 stars), the Bronze Star with Combat Distinguishing Device (one star), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Service Medal and the II MEF Leadership Award. 


He is married to Nicole Mercado and has one daughter, Lily.  They reside in San Clemente, California.
